All three Jamaican men failed to get into the final of the discus throw, in one of the biggest shocks at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on the penultimate day of competition.

Newly-crowned national record holder and national champion Ralford Mullings, who went into the championships ranked number four in the world, had one legal mark in the preliminaries, 56.82m, good for 35th of the 37 throwers who competed. He had two fouls, in the first and third rounds.

Mullings, who was ninth at the Olympic Games last year, was seen as one of the new generation of stars, as he broke the national record with a massive 72.01m in mid-August, also the area record, and won his first national senior championships with 65.82m in late June. Earlier, he had won the NCAA Division One outdoor title with 69.31m.

Chad Wright, an Olympic Games finalist, had a best of 62.87m in the second round. He started with 62.73m and threw 62.67m in the third round for 19th overall, while Fedrick Dacres threw 60.454m in the third round after throwing two fouls and finished 28th overall.
