KINGSTON, Jamaica —Detectives in the St Catherine South Police Division have charged a Portmore man with sacrilege after he allegedly broke into a church earlier this month.

The accused, 39-year-old Robert Barnett, otherwise called “Mogo”, of North Edgewater Avenue, Portmore, was arrested following the incident at a church on Cecile Avenue, Edgewater, on September 13.

Reports are that around 11:30 pm, Barnett forced open a window and entered the building, where he stole a bag containing $3,000 and a Samsung keyboard valued at $175,000. However, the church’s security system was triggered, and a private security team responded to the alert and found him inside the building. He was held and subsequently handed over to the police.

Barnett was formally charged on September 27, after being interviewed in the presence of his attorney. His court date is yet to be set.
