Multifaceted musician Corden “Heavy Unit” Barrett is singing for the ladies in his latest single,
My Sunrise, featuring Latoya HD.

Produced by Heavyunit Productions, the track was officially released on September 11.

“This project is bright and happy; the goal is to say some of the things our black women need to be hearing on a consistent basis: That they are beautiful, they are loved, and that they brighten up our lives. Women nurture and take care of so much and we should celebrate them every day,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

The reggae track was a collaborative effort by many talented creatives. It features Jermaine Campbell on drums, Nyerere Thomas on guitars, Courick Clarke of Heartcorproductions over dubbing keyboard, and Barrett on keybass.

The song was also mixed and mastered by Clarke. Additionally, the artwork was done by Michal Woznica and soulwise photography was done by Cheniette Barrett.

Inspired by a moment between a friend and a young lady at a restaurant named Sunrise, the song came to light a few months later with the recurring line, “you’re my sunrise girl, you light up my life” running through the singer’s mind.

“I was working at a desk job while going through recovery from a work-related injury and I got into a writing mode. I thought about writing a song to celebrate the black queens, the real melanated women, and the line came back to mind. I put pen to paper, the words flowed, and I was able to sing it over one of the original beats I created and from there, the journey of My Sunrise started,” Barrett revealed.

From there, he connected with his friend Orville Williams of Dajourney Productions and went to his studio and got the recording done.

He enlisted Latoya HD to do the background vocals, and the song was successfully created.

Currently based in Canada, the Jamaican-born artiste is an award-winning saxophonist and piano player, along with being a music producer, musician, businessman, and recording artiste.

His own previous releases include Get My Own and How Long Will You Stay Away.

On the production side, his most recent project is Rescue Me by Sone G, an August-released reggae song. Other productions include Ghetto Life by Mxdical, Busy Busy (God Is All Around) by Terriann Johnson, and War Mi by Singdi, which is featured on the Retro Vybz rhythm along with Stop It by Hazard Poshgad and Get My Own by Barrett himself.

More is on the horizon as several new songs and instrumentals are in the works.

“Next up for me is to just keep doing what I’m doing and putting out great music,” Barrett continued.

An official music video for My Sunrise is also in the pipeline.
