TCCU provides $2.4 m in grants to members’ children

Recipients of TCCU educational grants, along with their parents, pose with credit union representatives during the awards ceremony at the First Assembly of God Church in Falmouth last Friday.

TRELAWNY, Jamaica —The Trelawny Co-operative Credit Union (TCCU) on Friday awarded $2.4 million in educational grants to 84 children of its members, ranging from the primary to the tertiary level, during a ceremony at the First Assembly of God Church in Falmouth.

According to board president Steve Morris, this year’s allocation is more than double the $1.1 million distributed last year, reflecting the growing financial challenges facing parents in the parish.

The union received 134 applications, but only children of credit union members were eligible, resulting in a shortlist of recipients.

Morris noted that the demand has been so great that some parents joined the credit union in order for their children to qualify.

“This is a worthy cause, and as a board we saw the need to increase the amount,” Morris disclosed.

“We intend to continue supporting parents and students as much as we can.”

The initiative is part of the credit union’s ongoing effort to give back to the community while encouraging educational advancement among its members’ families.

Meanwhile, Neville Black, a member of the Trelawny Co-operative Credit Union and parent of two recipients, praised the organisation for consistently investing in the future of children through its grant programme.
Speaking on behalf of parents, Black expressed gratitude for the support and commended the union for reinvesting in members’ families, urging that the initiative be continued.

Currently, TCCU membership stands at over 4,000.
