KINGSTON, Jamaica — A number of Jamaicans across the island are now without electricity due to a technical issue at the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Company’s Exelerate Energy LNG facility which supplies natural gas to some power plants, according to the utility company.

JPS said the Jamalco power plant in Clarendon and the SJPC power plant in St Catherine are the two power generation facilities immediately impacted. It said the situation has been made worse by the fact that several plants operated by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are unavailable or unable to operate on back-up fuel.

In addition, power supply from renewables is intermittent due to the unavailability of wind or cloud cover impacting the solar generating facilities, JPS said.

The electricity provider said the operators of the LNG facility and the IPPs are working to restore normalcy in the shortest possible time.
