WESTMORELAND, Jamaica—The three cops who were found guilty for the incident in which 31-year-old construction worker Mario Deane was fatally beaten while in police custody in 2014 will be going home following Tuesday’s sentencing hearing at the Westmoreland Circuit Court.
District constables Marlon Grant and Juliana Clevon received suspended sentences for three years.
Meanwhile, Corporal Elaine Stewart received five years in custody; however, her lawyer gave notice of appeal. They granted her bail pending the appeal.
Stewart, Grant and Clevon were charged with manslaughter and misconduct in a public office. Stewart has an additional charge of perverting the course of justice.
The three who were found guilty by a seven-member jury on May 22, all of whom are charged with manslaughter and misconduct in a public office. Stewart has an additional charge of perverting the course of justice.
