Elel Baker created history for Jamaica on Monday when he won the island’s first-ever medal at the Senior Pan American Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Panama.

Baker won a bronze in the pommel horse event to cap off an impressive showing by Team Jamaica which had a record three finalists.

“It means a lot, it means I have improved over the years,” Baker, who finished fourth in the event at last year’s championships, said in an interview.

“I’m really excited to have gone the next step up and get this,” he added, displaying his bronze medal.

The Canada-born Baker finished third behind two Americans – Brandon Dang and Joshua Karnes who placed first and second respectively.

Raeya Linton and Courtney Bell were the other two Jamaican finalists, with Linton just missing out on a medal after placing fourth in the vault.
