JCF LAUNCHES AGRICULTURAL PROTECTION BRANCH: “SECURING AGRICULTURE, SUSTAINING THE NATION

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) launched its Agricultural Protection Branch (APB) today at the Specialised Operations Branch in Kingston. The launch, ”themed Securing Agriculture, Sustaining the Nation”, marks a significant step in safeguarding Jamaica’s agricultural sector, recognising its crucial role in national security and economic stability.

The event featured key figures, including the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, the Honourable Floyd Green; the Honourable Julliet Cuthbert Flynn, State Minister in the Ministry of National Security; Deputy Commissioner of Police Warren Clarke in charge of Strategic Operation; and Mr Oral Pascoe, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Agricultural Protection Branch.

The event, which was held at the Specialised Operation’s Branch Tactical Academy in Kingston, is a welcomed addition to the JCF, as they recognise the implications that can come from the insidious effects of praedial larceny.

“Jamaica’s economy and social fabric are deeply intertwined with its agricultural sector,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Warren Clarke as he delivered the charge to members. He expressed the importance of agriculture to any nation and outlined the lasting impact praedial larceny could have on the sustenance of the nation.  “Agriculture provides employment, contributes to food security, and supports rural communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr Oral Pascoe stated, “The establishment of the Agricultural Protection Branch underscores the JCF’s commitment to protecting this vital sector from threats such as praedial larceny (theft of farm produce), vandalism, and other criminal activities that undermine agricultural productivity and economic growth.” He ended his remark by congratulating the men and women who are now members of this branch that will safeguard the livelihood of all Jamaicans.

Ministers Green and Cuthbert Flynn both expressed how delighted they were to be witnessing the birth of a branch that they are sure will be supported by all ministries within the government. Minister Green expressed that being a farmer himself, he can speak for the over 200 registered men and women in Jamaica who provide for their families through farming. “We are happy that this branch will help in stemming a crime that has, over the years, been affecting the entire country.”

Suffice to say, the launch of this branch is particularly important to Jamaica. A nation where agriculture is a cornerstone of its economy and a way of life. The branch’s focus is on securing agricultural assets directly addressing the challenges faced by farmers, ensuring they can operate in a safer and more secure environment. This, in turn, is expected to boost agricultural output, reduce food costs, and contribute to overall national development. The initiative reflects a proactive approach to national security, recognising that a thriving agricultural sector is essential for a stable and prosperous Jamaica.
