Customer service rep charged with unauthorised access to computer data, simple larceny

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica— A St Catherine customer service representative has been charged with unauthorised access to computer data and simple larceny following incidents in Kingston and Portmore between May 9 and May 28.

She has been identified as a 41-year-old Winsom Smith of Poinciana Drive in Cedar Grove, St Catherine.

Reports from the Portmore police are that on Friday, May 9, a man visited a financial institution in Portmore where he tried to withdraw a sum from his account. He reported the issue to the bank after the transaction failed and sought assistance.

Smith replaced the man’s bank card and assisted him in withdrawing .

$100,000. The man encountered the same issue on another date and was again assisted by Smith, who replaced the card. Sometime later, the man’s daughter discovered that the account balance was less than it should be, and a report was made to the police.

Following an investigation, it was borne out that the accused woman withdrew $1,400,000 from the account. She was taken into custody and charged on Wednesday, June 4.

She is scheduled to appear in the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday, July 4.
