Kingston College (KC) standout thrower Despiro Wray has enrolled with Florida State University (FSU).

Wray, who has been having an impressive season in which he won the shot put at the high school boys’ athletic championships, Carifta Games and Penn Relays, told the Jamaica Observer he chose FSU after a careful thought process.

“My move to FSU is a very calculated one. I sat down and discussed it with my coach and we said it’s the best option for me,” said Wray.

“I am feeling very excited about the move to FSU. I went on a visit and everyone treated me like family and the facilities that they have can for sure take me to the next level in throws,” he pointed out.

Wray’s 20.87m Penn Relay gold is the 10th best throw in Penn’s history and he feels at FSU he can achieve greater things.

“I believe the throws coach at FSU can help me with that, so I am just willing to put in the work so I can make my debut at the Olympics,” he added.

Wray had announced himself earlier this season on February 28 with 20.23m at the Carifta Trials. He threw 19.66 for gold at Carifta Games and 18.96 at ‘Champs’ using the 6.00 kg put.

Wray had an impressive series of throws, all over the 20 metre mark, to take gold in Philadelphia — starting with 20.31m, then 20.36m on his second attempt before concluding with 20.40m and then 20.67m on his final attempt after two fouls in the middle.
