Cops kill alleged gang member, seize gun in East Kingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man was shot dead by police after he attempted to flee a nightclub on Langston Road in East Kingston Saturday morning.

The police are reporting that a firearm was seized during the incident. The dead man has been identified as 28-year-old Ravi Henderson, a construction worker of Fourth Avenue, East Kingston.

According to the police, they were on mobile patrol around 12:50 am, when they went to the nightclub and began conducting a search of some of the patrons.

They entered the bar, and Henderson, upon seeing the police ran along a passageway. The police went in pursuit of Henderson, and he entered a room.

The police opened the door, and Henderson reportedly pulled a firearm and pointed it at them. They took evasive action and opened fire in his direction, hitting him in the upper body.

The firearm was retrieved and found to be a 9mm pistol with nine 9mm cartridges. Henderson was taken to Kingston Public Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

The police said Henderson was a member of the McGregor Gully gang and was aligned with a top gangster from that area. They said he was armed due to an inter-gang conflict in the area.

It was the fourth police killing in two days. On Friday,  three men were shot dead by police in two separate incidents. Two firearms were reportedy seized.
