Tamarind (Tamarindus Indica) - Jamaica

Tamarind (Tamarindus Indica) - Jamaica.

Tamarind is a Jamaican Fruit (known scientifically as Tamarindus indica) is a leguminous tree bearing edible fruit that is indigenous to tropical Africa.

Tamarind lumber is used to make furniture, carvings, turned objects such as mortars and pestles, chopping blocks, and other wood items.

The tree produces pods filled with paste-like, sweet-sour fruit which are harvested by pulling the pod from its stalk. The bean-like pods are filled with seeds surrounded by a fibrous pulp.

The pulp of the young fruit is green and sour. As it ripens, the juicy pulp becomes paste-like and more sweet-sour.

Interestingly, tamarind is sometimes referred to as the “date of India.”

Tamarind is used in many dishes around the world, and may even have medicinal properties.

The pulp is widely used for cooking in South and Southeast Asia, Mexico, the Middle East and the Caribbean. It is used in sauces, marinades, chutneys, drinks and desserts.

The seeds and leaves are also edible. Modern researchers are now studying this plant for potential medicinal uses, as tamarind have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Tamarind pulp can also be used as a metal polish. It contains tartaric acid, which helps remove tarnish from copper and bronze.

There are several ways to eat and enjoy tamarind.

It can be used in sweet and savory dishes, or eaten straight from the pod. In Mexico and the Caribbean, the pulp is diluted with water and sugared to make an agua fresca drink.

Tamarind Ball is a another taste treat made in Jamaica in which the pulp, once taken from the pod is covered with sugar to provide a sweet-sour delite.

Tamarind seed oil can also be made. Tamarind seed oil is the oil made from the kernel of tamarind seeds.

A mature tree may be capable of producing up to 175 kg (386 lb) of fruit per year.

The trees will usually fruit within three to four years if provided optimum growing conditions.
