Catching Barracuda Fish, Handline Fishing In Jamaica (Caribbean).

A fisherman uses the handline fishing technique to catch Barracuda at Galina Point by the Galina Lighthouse in St Mary, Jamaica.

Handline fishing (also handlining) is a fishing technique where a single fishing line is held in the hands. Handlining is one the oldest forms of fishing and it is practiced throughout the world today.

Don't confuse Handline fishing with handfishing as they are different. Handline fishing is done with one or more fishing lures or baited hooks are attached to the line. A hook, fishing lure, or a fishing jig and many times a weight and/or a fishing float can be attached to the line.

A jigging motion is used to attract the fish whih is normally caught while trying to strike the lure. The fish they can also be snagged by the hooks as it investigate the jigged lure.

The lure can also be still and the angler feels for the bait to be picked up by a fish. The fishing bait also be trolled.

After a strike occurs the hook is set and then the fish is hauled in.

Often handline fishing is done close to the water but can also be done near or on the surface.
