ST JAMES, Jamaica — With Montego Bay seeing a surge in 5K running events across the city, it has prompted municipal officials to consider formal measures to accommodate the growing wellness culture.

Mayor Richard Vernon said the St James Municipal Corporation is working with police and event organisers to identify designated routes that would reduce disruption to traffic and business operations. Currently, race organisers choose from several different courses depending on the event.

“We are looking at the possibility of designating an area for 5Ks,” Vernon said. “We will have to eventually find a location that will not disrupt operations while persons pursue this type of activity.”

Montego Bay is also expanding green spaces as part of its wider development plans, which Vernon says will improve air quality and support public health initiatives.

One of the largest events this year was the MBJ Charity Run, which drew nearly 3,000 participants and raised about $30 million for educational grants. More than 100 companies supported the event, including Caribbean Solar Life and the Airports Authority of Jamaica.

Applications for grants under the MBJ Charity Run’s expanded programme will remain open until September 30, 2025 at www.mbjairport.com.
