Atlantic Ghost crabs are generalist scavengers and predators of small animals. The name "ghost crab" derives from their behavior; active during the night and sleeping during the day along with their generally pale coloration.

It is a common species along the Atlantic coast, where it is the only species of ghost crab.

The Ghost crab lives in burrows in sand above the present water level. Older individuals dig their burrows farther inland from the sea. Burrows can be up to 1.3 m (4 ft 3 in) deep, and can be closed off with sand during hot periods.

These Ghost crabs are also sometimes called sand crabs, though the name refers to various other crabs that do not belong to the subfamily.

There is a decrease in the abundance of ghost crabs along sandy beaches frequented by people and vehicle trampling, which results in direct crushing of crabs, as well as indirect damage such as compression of sand which reduces habitat suitability.
