Negril is a town located on the west coast of Jamaica that spans across 2 parishes, Hanover and Westmoreland Parish. The town is known for the miles of sandy beaches with calm turquoise waters. The Seven Mile Beach is lined with bars, restaurants and resorts, many of them international and all-inclusive. The name "Negril" is a shortened version of "Negrillo" meaning "Little Black Ones" as it was originally named by the Spanish in 1494.
The Spaniards called the area Anguila Negra which was shortened to Negrillo and then to Negril. There are two theories as to how the town got its name: Firstly, from the black cliffs south of the village, and secondly, from the large amount of black eels along Negril's coast.
