KINGSTON, Jamaica— A man, who is charged with defrauding almost 30 people of a minimum of $150,000 each in an overseas work and travel scam, paid $100,000 in restitution when he turned up at the Half-Way Tree Parish Court on Tuesday.

Jamaal Black, 20, is indicted on multiple counts of obtaining money by means of false pretence, fraudulent conversion and operating an overseas employment agency without a licence.

The full sum of the amount that Black defrauded was not stated in court, but it is expected to be disclosed on the next court date.

Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell expressed her dissatisfaction in the attempts made by the accused to provide restitution to the victims of his overseas employment scam.

She then referred the matter to a plea and case management hearing when a bail application will be made by Black’s attorney.

A plea and case management hearing is presided over by a judge where he/she determines whether the matter can be set down for trial or final disposition.

Black will return to court on May 21.

He was remanded into custody.
