30 of 33 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in April were males — RSU

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Of the 33 people killed in motor vehicle collisions during the month of April, 91 per cent were males.

The deaths resulted from 29 fatal crashes during the month according to the Road Safety Unit (RSU) which is located within the Island Traffic Authority.

The RSU said fatalities decreased by 11 per cent and fatal crashes by 17 per cent when compared to the corresponding period in 2023. The unit said fatalities for 2024 are projected to decrease by two per cent when compared with 2023.

Meanwhile, a breakdown of the road deaths in April shows that pedestrians accounted 24 per cent, private motor vehicle drivers accounted for 18 per cent, private motor vehicle passengers accounted for 10 per cent, pillion riders accounted for 12 per cent, and motorcyclists accounted for 27 per cent.

Vulnerable road users combined (pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists and pillion riders) accounted for 67 per cent of the road users killed during the month under review.

The parishes of St Catherine, St Andrew and St Ann each accounted for 15 per cent of road fatalities during the month of April, with Portland accounting for 12 per cent.
